Initially held in 2017, the inaugural edition was very well received and widely. In 2018 and 2019 the exhibitions grew in scope, featuring guest artists alongside the solo and collaborative work of Alice Hill and Shane Bower.

Visitor numbers grew, with well over 1000 people visiting the GPH to look at and buy the fantastic work displayed in both those years. Works from the exhibition are widely sought after and now feature proudly in resorts, well known restaurants, corporate offices and private homes and collections across Fiji and overseas.

The exhibition had to have a year off in 2020 due to the pandemic, and it is partially due to that break that this year’s edition is called “ The Return” however, as Alice Hill, the award winning glassblower and owner of Hot Glass Fiji explains, it is actually about much more than that:

“ We chose ‘The Return’ as the theme for this year’s Born from Fire because of the unforeseen effects that the pandemic has had on life here.” she says “ The economic conditions caused by the loss of overseas visitors have meant that many people have returned to the village, to the farms and plantations and to the ocean to sustain them. A return to the vanua, to a pace of life that was slowly on the wane, to the roots of Fiji’s cultural life.”

We are fortunate to be here, and to have this return as an option and we hope to reflect that in some of the work that will be on show.
