The studio floor goes into Hot Glass Fiji

We have had a very productive week, not of the glass making kind but getting my studio floor in. After a recommendation from a friend we had a visit from Jiten who is a local builder, he gave us a quote to do the labour for our studio floor.

Day 1
Day 1

Jiten and has team of 4 workers turned up on Tuesday and started to dig, level, box for our cement pad, after a couple of calls and many, many calculations of the amount of cubic meters of concrete we needed we were all set to poor yesterday, Friday.

The builders had done us proud, getting everything ready and putting up with a kai vulagi lady wanting to know, what they were doing and how they were doing it!!

Time to pour
Time to pour

I do have to admit i was stressing out a bit about the pour, reasons being, the studio is half way up a hill and of course the lorry was unable to come up the drive so we had to get reinforcements in – Vinaka to all 7 boys….. for barrowing the loads up the hill (very steep, oh and thank you to Koko’s and Crowsnest for the extra barrows).

I was then informed that we only had 1 hour to do it! Yikes (Jiten had already told me it would take about 2 hours…. It’s Fiji don’t worry!). Big thank you to the cement driver for being so understanding and keeping that cement moving in the drum. 2 hours and 10 mins of constant, barrows up the hill, leveling, smoothing, the slab was in. Few….

Now as i look across my studio i am so eager and excited to get back in and fire up the furnace, funny how a concrete slab 5.2 x 5.3 can make me feel so pleased,  it’s going to make such a huge difference to my working day plus it takes us one step closer to the vision we have for Hot Glass Fiji.
